At Boot Campaign, we understand that life is full of unexpected twists and turns– especially for our military families. Whether it’s a severe combat injury, the loss of a job, or any number of life’s great surprises, they can leave our military heroes, and their family members, facing uncertain times and in need of urgent relief.
We came to know this reality well when Staff Sgt. Marcus Burleson (USMC) was critically injured while serving in Afghanistan. The Texas native and father of three children, has served in U.S. Marine Corps for more than a decade. Burleson deployed to Iraq in 2006 and 2007, and Afghanistan in 2011. It was on the deployment to Afghanistan that Burleson was severely injured after a bomb he was dismantling detonated in his face. Burleson lost the vision in his left eye and has since had both of his arms amputated. He faced immediate needs for himself and his family.
At this moment, the Boot Campaign’s program, Military Recovery Fund (MRF), was born.
The Military Recovery Fund is a program administered by the Boot Campaign to ensure that those who serve in the U.S. Military have the necessary resources in a time of need. Support for veterans, active duty service members, and their families can be provided through a variety of initiatives that include housing, job placement, wellness, urgent assistance and family support efforts. http://BootCampaign.com/MRF
Through MRF, the Boot Campaign raised monies to support Burleson through his recovery and rebuilding process. Already, funds raised have been put toward vehicle modifications and housing. Burleson now sits on the MRF committee helping to oversee the granting process for other military personnel facing emergency needs.
Burleson is a Purple Heart recipient who is currently living at Walter Reed Medical Center while undergoing physical therapy. He plans to move back to Texas after medically retiring from the Marine Corps in 2014. Help provide urgent assistance to our military, and their families, by making a donation today.
