“Help Rebuild NY” Event Raises $20,000 for Disaster Relief Efforts on Staten Island
Chris Weidman, Theo Rossi and DeMarco Murray Host Fundraiser at GoldBar NY
New York, NY (May 2, 2013) – As rebuilding efforts continue throughout the path of destruction left by Hurricane Sandy, a group of athletes and television star came together to raise relief funds for home renovations and rebuilds on Staten Island. Bad Boy MMA athletes Chris Weidman (UFC Middleweight Title Contender) and DeMarco Murray (Dallas Cowboys Star Running Back) teamed up with Sons of Anarchy star, and Staten Strong founder, Theo Rossi to assist in the rebuilding of a hurricane ravaged home in Staten Island. The invite-only charity event was held April 26, 2013 at Gold Bar in NYC. Through their efforts, Weidman, Murray and Rossi raised $20,000 to benefit Staten Strong.
“”Help Rebuild NY” was a monumental event for Staten Strong, and ensured that we can continue to rebuild our community,” said Theo Rossi, founder of Staten Strong and actor on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. “Hosting with Bad Boy represented athletes Chris Weidman and DeMarco Murray was an honor on every level. It shows that coming together we can do anything.”
The events of Hurricane Sandy strike close to the heart for both New Yorker’s Weidman and Rossi. Rossi’s childhood neighborhood in Staten Island received little attention or funding post-Sandy. Rossi, a huge fan of the UFC and NFL, was very excited to partner with both Bad Boy athletes for the cause.
On Sunday, April 28, 2013 Rossi, Weidman and Murray visited Staten Island and surprised 81-year-old Roseanne Finn with news that the Staten Strong team will be rebuilding her home. Funds raised at “Help Rebuild NY” are making her home rebuild possible. Hurricane Sandy’s floodwaters and fast moving debris left the place Finn called home for more than 40 years in complete disarray. Finn’s home is expected to be livable by June 2013.
Staten Strong is a program administered by The Boot Campaign to address the disaster relief needs of Staten Island residents. Staten Island natives, including those with industry expertise obtained through military service, carry out efforts such as home rehabilitation and other necessary resources in their time of need.
