Lake Norman, NC – November 6, 2013 – Boot Campaign and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation are partnering to sponsor a mortgage free home to a wounded military veteran. Boot Campaign’s “Heroes into Homeowners” program is made possible through the campaign’s charity partner, Military Warriors Support Foundation.

Retired Sergeant Kyle Lewis was presented with a mortgage-free home during Fairway’s Home Giveaway Week. In the week leading up to Veteran’s Day, Fairway will present four mortgage-free homes in four days.

Lewis is the second recipient during Fairway’s Home Giveaway Week and the eleventh recipient to date, where a wounded Veteran that Fairway has honored with the American dream of homeownership, without the obligation of a mortgage or mortgage payments. Overall, thirteen mortgage-free home presentations will have been sponsored by Fairway before Veteran’s Day on November 11, 2013.

As a teenager, Lewis participated in JROTC and joined the military right after high school. “My instructors were Infantry, Special Forces and they were my role models,” said Lewis.

While deployed to Afghanistan in 2006, Lewis was wounded in combat. It was this injury that awarded Lewis the Purple Heart. He deployed a second time in 2009 where he was exposed to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast and was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury.

Lewis’ plan for the future is to take advantage of the GI Bill to go to school and is considering studying computer sciences.

Lewis was presented with the mortgage-free home during a Fairway Independent Mortgage “Boot Camp” event held in Lake Norman, NC, designed to train local mortgage professionals and real estate agents on how to help active U.S. military service members and veterans overcome their unique challenges to buying a home. Fairway’s Military Mortgage Specialist (MMS) and Certified Military Residential Specialist (CMRS) certification programs equip housing professionals to handle with care the home purchase needs of active duty and former military clients.

“Lewis is a true American hero and we are grateful for his service,” said Louise Thaxton, Fairway’s Military Mortgage Director who presented Lewis with the “key” to his mortgage-free home. “He has sacrificed so much for his country. He, like many other Americans who have put their lives on the line, deserves a chance at homeownership. Our Boot Camp events were created to help them realize that dream.”

Fairway Independent Mortgage is a proud supporter of the American military and has helped thousands of active military personnel and veterans nationwide buy homes. Fairway employees have pledged several hundred thousand dollars in donations over a 12-month period to help provide mortgage-free homes to veterans in association with the Boot Campaign, a non-profit organization supporting returning American military troops, and made possible through the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Homes 4 Wounded Heroes program.

After acquiring distressed properties from financial institutions, the Military Warriors Support Foundation uses funds provided by Fairway to provide accommodations and modifications for the specific heroes. In addition to the home, the families receive three years of family and financial mentoring.
